Why MFA Is Required
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) protects your CalArts account by requiring both your password and a secondary verification method — such as a mobile app, text code, or hardware key.
This helps prevent unauthorized access to sensitive systems even if your password is compromised.
Systems That Require MFA
MFA is currently required for logging into the following CalArts systems:
• QuickLaunch SSO (and soon, Rapid Identity)
• Microsoft 365 / Outlook / OneDrive
• VPN Access
MFA applies to all students, staff, faculty, and alumnx.
MFA Methods You Can Use
We support a variety of MFA methods. You may be asked to set up more than one:
• Mobile authenticator apps (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator)
• Push notification (on mobile apps)
• Text (SMS) verification codes
• Phone call verification
• Backup/recovery codes
• Hardware security keys (e.g., YubiKey)
Note: Security questions are being phased out and should not be used as a primary MFA method.
Lost Your MFA Device?
If you still have access to your account using another MFA method (like a backup code or authenticator app), you can update your MFA settings directly by logging in and changing your phone number or device.
If you no longer have access to any MFA method, submit a Zendesk ticket at cait.calarts.edu.
If you contact us from an unfamiliar email address, we may need to verify your identity before we can reset your MFA settings.
