CalArts has adopted Zoom Phone as our new on-campus phone system!
As part of this exciting move, we want to make sure you are aware of the different methods you'll be able to make a phone call!
One exciting feature of Zoom Phone, is the mobility it offers the community! Whether on-campus or working from home, you'll be able to use Zoom Phone with your existing dedicated phone extension.
This added mobility is accomplished primarily through the use of the Softphone client.
You will need to be licensed. You will receive an invitation to activate your phone license via email.
What is a Softphone?
To keep it simple, a softphone is a type of software-based phone. It allows you to make phone calls over an internet connection without needing designated physical hardware, and it can be installed on desktops and, if you so choose, mobile devices as well.
In short, softphones help you make telephone calls without an actual telephone.
How Easy Is It To Make A Call?
- Launch the Zoom application on your computer
- If not signed in, sign in with Google
- Enter your CalArts email address & complete SSO process
- Once signed in, you'll see an icon for Phone
You will not need to enter 8+1 to dial-out of the Institute, but you can enter a 4-digit extension or search for anyone in our organization (CalArts) by name. You can also easily search for other users!
Zoom Phone is also available via the Zoom App on iOS and Android devices.

What If I Still Want a Desk Phone?
We will be sending out a survey, if you're not comfortable using the softphone client, and would prefer a standard desk phone instead, please indicate that on the survey (or contact your dept/school admin).
If you do not receive the survey by 9/25, please email cait@calarts.edu.
