How to Access ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is available to all students, but is intended for remote learning purposes only.

Several students have reported having trouble accessing CalArts content from their home countries. In these situations, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can help bypass such restrictions. This guide will outline how to get access to ExpressVPN and how to set up the software on your personal computer.

The use of VPNs may be restricted in your country and in some cases it may be illegal. Please review applicable laws before requesting access.

Requesting Access to ExpressVPN

To request access, please submit a ticket to CAIT. If you are currently unable access your CalArts email address due to restrictions, be sure to include an email address we can reach you at.

In the description, please include your full name, CalArts ID number, and the country you are currently residing in (if you are an international student). Once complete, click submit.

At this point, we will review your application and, if approved, we will send you an email with the details for setting up ExpressVPN on your computer.

Setting up ExpressVPN

After you have been approved, you will receive a ticket response from CAIT. In the email, click Getting Started: Express VPN.

You will be redirected to a page like the one below with details for signing into your account:

1. Select the operating system for the device you are currently using.

2. Copy this activation code to your clipboard or leave this page open. We will be needing this later.

3. Click Download.

Depending on your operating system, save or open the file and begin the installation process.

After the installer completes, ExpressVPN should automatically open. Click Sign In.

Paste the activation code saved from step 2. Click Continue.

Connecting to the VPN

Now that your account is set up, you should be all set to connect to the VPN. To get connected:

1. Select the location you would like to impersonate. We suggest USA - Los Angeles - 1.

2. Click the red power button.

You will know you have successfully connected when the ring turns green and the message below says "Connected."

When you ready to disconnect, simply click the power button again and the VPN should disconnect.
